Top 5 Outdoor Family Photo Locations in Calgary
If you're planning an outdoor family photography session here in Calgary, choosing the right photo location can make all the difference. The best family photo spots offer more than just a pretty backdrop, they provide natural light, open space for younger children to move freely, and a setting that feels authentic to your family's story.
As a Calgary family photographer with over 15 years experience, I've spent many years scouting and shooting in locations across the city, and I always come back to a handful of favourites. Below, I'm sharing my top 5 go-to outdoor locations for outdoor family portrait sessions, plus one bonus spot for families wanting something a little more urban and unexpected.
Why Location Matters for Your Family Photos
The right photo location does more than look beautiful in photos, it helps to set the tone for your entire portrait session. A relaxed, open outdoor space helps children and pets feel free to explore and play, which leads to the natural, candid moments that make outdoor family sessions so special.
When I help clients select a location, I consider a few things: the light at different times of day, how much space there is for young kids to move around, and whether the setting matches the mood the family is hoping for - whimsical and wild, or clean and elegant.
My Top 5 Outdoor Locations for Family Photos in Calgary
Baker Park
Baker Park is one of my most requested outdoor locations for family sessions and for good reason. Tucked along the Bow River in northwest Calgary, it offers open meadows, mature trees, and scenic riverside pathways, giving us plenty of variety within a single session. The park's natural, slightly wild landscape makes it ideal for candid, playful family photos, whether that's kids having some room to roam or a quiet walk along the water's edge.
Baker Park is especially beautiful in the fall when the surrounding trees turn gold, but it photographs just as beautifully in the soft light of late spring and into the warm summer months. The sun-bowl is also often filled with gorgeous blooms from late July to early September making for a gorgeous backdrop. With its beautiful treed archways and riverside pathways, it's easy to see why this location made the list. Due to the parks size, it's a wonderful choice for families with young children who need room to explore, as well as larger extended family sessions that require more space to spread out comfortably.
🌿 BEST FOR: Children of All Ages, Extended Family Sessions, those wanting a variety of settings at one location
📍 LOCATION: 9333 Scenic Bow Rd NW

Griffith Woods Park
Tucked along the Elbow River, Griffith Woods Park is one of Calgary's hidden gems for family portrait sessions. When shooting Calgary outdoor family photography at Griffith Woods Park, the dense trees and natural pathways create a soft, dreamy quality in photos, especially during golden hour. It's a favourite for families who want a slightly more woodland, storybook feel to their images and more privacy than a wide open park.
This location tends to work best for smaller family groups, as the pathways are narrower and more intimate than an open park setting.
🌿 BEST FOR: Smaller Family Groups, Teenagers, Intimate Sessions, Dog Friendly
✋ NOT IDEAL FOR: Strollers, Family Members with Limited Mobility, Large Groups
📍 LOCATION: Discovery Ridge Blvd SW
Douglas Fir Trail
If you are looking for a magical, woodland feel without leaving the city, the Douglas Fir Trail is an absolute hidden gem for family photos. Nestled above the Bow River, this unique spot features massive trees and lush greenery. This trail is the perfect length for a mini-hike paired with an adventurous photo session.
Tucked away in Calgary's Edworthy Park, it’s on of my go-to spots for a quick, nature-filled escape when a trip to the mountains just isn't in the cards. While I wouldn't recommend it for families with toddlers, it is incredibly fun for kids aged 6 and up. They can burn off energy running, climbing hills, balancing on fallen trees, and jumping off stairs and bridges. As a reward, the top of the trail boasts a fantastic view of the city skyline!
This location offers the perfect blend of a fun family outing and the opportunity for me to capture amazing, candid photos of you in your element.
🌿 BEST FOR: Families with children 6+, adventurous families
✋ NOT IDEAL FOR: Strollers, Family Members with Limited Mobility, Large Groups
📍 LOCATION: 175 Bow River Pathway
Confederation Park
Confederation Park spans over 400 acres and offers a beautiful balance of manicured natural green space, making it a versatile choice for families who want a polished, elevated look. There are also smaller, rustic wooden footbridges crossing over the water. These are perfect for leading-line compositions and giving your family photos a quaint, timeless feel.
A gentle, meandering stream also runs right through the heart of the park. Because the water is typically shallow and calm, it creates a very peaceful, serene atmosphere. The stream is lined with mature weeping willows and large trees that drape over the water, filtering the sunlight beautifully and lined with gorgeous rocks.
🌿 BEST FOR: Children of All Ages, Extended Family Sessions
📍 LOCATION: 905-30 Ave NW
Fish Creek Park
This sprawling park offers endless opportunities for wandering, exploration and family photos. As one of the largest urban parks in North America, it's understandably a popular destination — which means it can get quite busy during peak seasons. For that reason, I recommend booking weeknight family sessions only at this location.
Compared to spots like Baker Park, this location has a more natural, less manicured feel - lending your images a rustic, organic quality rather than a polished, formal look.
The park features a mix of forested areas, mature established trees, open meadows, and a historic site - Bow Valley Ranche - a sought-after spot for weddings and intimate events. The ranch house and surrounding grounds offer a textured, rustic backdrop that stands apart from typical park scenery, making it a great fit for families looking for something a bit different.
🌿 BEST FOR: Children of All Ages, Dog Friendly
✋ NOT IDEAL FOR: Sessions needed on a weekend
📍 LOCATION: Bow Bottom Trail SE
When to Book an Outdoor Family Session in Calgary
I offer outdoor family photography sessions in Calgary from May through to October, which allows us to take full advantage of Calgary's warmer months and longer daylight hours. Each season offers something a little different:
Late spring brings fresh greenery and blooming gardens, perfect for a bright, airy feel.
Summer offers long evenings and soft golden-hour light well into the day.
Fall transforms our parks with warm, golden tones, making it one of the most popular times to book.
Because outdoor sessions are in high demand during peak season, I recommend booking 6-8 weeks in advance to secure your preferred date and location.
Choosing the Right Location for Your Family
Every family is different, and the best location for your photo session depends on a few key factors:
Family Size - Larger families often do best in open spaces like Baker Park, while smaller families may enjoy the intimacy of Griffith Woods Park.
Style Preference - If your family is drawn to a polished, elegant look then Confederation Park or Baker Park will be the perfect fit. For a location that provides a more rustic and organic feel to your final portraits, Douglas Fir Trail would be one of my recommendations.
The Children’s Ages - Younger children and toddlers often do best in open, low-obstacle spaces where they can move freely without restriction. Additionally, with sessions taking place 90 minutes prior to sunset, some parks provide the opportunity to start a little earlier due to the open shade available.
During your pre-session consultation, I'll help guide you toward the location that best fits your family's personality, style, and session goals.
