Family Photos at Baker Park, Calgary

The late summer and early fall months are extremely busy for outdoor family session but I look forward to the return to one of my favourite session locations: Baker Park in Calgary, Alberta. The family session below features an extended family session that I had the privilege of photographing this past fall and it's a perfect example of why this park remains one of my go-to spots for professional family photos year after year. If you're searching for a family photographer near me who knows exactly where to go for beautiful, golden-light portraits, this post will walk you through why Baker Park consistently delivers.

Why Baker Park Is One of My Favorite Locations for a Family Photo Shoot

As one of many Calgary family photographers who shoots here regularly, I love Baker Park for a few specific reasons:

  • Variety in one location — I'm able to move through the entire east side of the park during a single session, capturing close-up portraits, distance shots, images along the water, and views overlooking the Bow River, all without needing to relocate to a new park

  • Well-maintained pathways and garden areas — the walking paths, grass, and the garden area near the water are consistently well-kept, which makes a noticeable difference in how polished the final images look

  • A sense of privacy, even when busy — the park is large and expansive, so even during busier periods, families don't feel crowded or on display

  • Easy logistics — lots of parking, and it's simple to find, which matters when you're wrangling kids and outfit changes before a session

About This Session: Outdoor Extended Family Session

Extended family sessions are especially meaningful, as they bring multiple generations together in one place — a rare opportunity to preserve not just a moment, but the relationships and connections that define a family as a whole. We timed this session for early fall and approximately 2 hours prior to sunset, to take full advantage of Baker Park's soft, warm evening light throughout the park and along the Bow River. This family did have smaller children under the age of 5, which is why we started a little earlier than the 90 minutes prior to sunset that I normally recommend.

Best Time of Year and Time of Day for Photos at Baker Park

  • Best time of day: Approximately 90 minutes before sunset, for warm, golden-hour light along the water and through the trees

  • Best season: Late summer through fall — this is also an excellent location for an early summer family photoshoot, as the garden area in the sun bowl is filled with a gorgeous array of flowers

  • Busiest months: September tends to be the busiest month at the park for photos, so if privacy is a priority mid-week sessions are worth considering

What to Know Before Your Family Photo Shoot at Baker Park

  • Parking: Plentiful and easy to find — no need to arrive extra early just to secure a spot and parking is free

  • Facilities: A public washroom on-site is available for last-minute wardrobe changes and make-up touch ups if needed

  • Crowds: The park can get busy, especially in September, but its size means there's still plenty of space to find a private, uncrowded backdrop
