The Red, White and Gold Gala 2026: The Heart Behind the Evening
I had the privilege of working together with Laura James Photography to document this very special evening. Held at the Calgary TELUS Convention Centre, the event brought together more than 600 Albertans — athletes, sports lovers, and community members all united in support of a cause that often goes undiscussed in high-performance sport: athlete mental health and wellness.
This year's theme, Muscle and Motion, celebrated both the strength and artistry of Alberta's elite athletes. The evening featured an unforgettable live fashion show where Olympians and Paralympians from Paris 2024and Milano-Cortina 2026 walked the runway in looks curated by celebrated Calgary fashion designer Paul Hardy— each outfit reflecting the athlete's unique personal journey in sport. Decorated athletes in attendance included 14-time Paralympic medallist Mark Arendz alongside Olympic champions Brett Gallant, Isabelle Weidemann, Ivanie Blondin, Kelsey Mitchell, Kasia Gruchalla-Wesierski and many more.
The gala also hosted an athlete-artist exhibition, showcasing original works by six athlete-artists including watercolour Calgary landscapes by Olympic freestyle skier India Sherret and paintings by Olympic speed skater Brooklyn McDougall. The artwork auction alone raised $17,000.
In total, the evening raised an extraordinary $230,000. These funds that go directly toward one-on-one mental health support, emergency mental health action plans, athlete wellness workshops, and mental health first aid training for coaches and sport staff across Alberta. It was a reminder that behind every medal and podium moment is a human being — and that supporting athletes means supporting the whole person, not just the performance.
