Sharing with you today this handsome baby boy’s older newborn photography session that I photographed when he was 12 weeks old. Although I highly recommend coming into my studio for your newborn photoshoot when your brand-new baby is between 6 to 21 days old, I do still photograph babies at all ages.
Newborn photos when baby is 6 to 21 days old
The reason why I strongly recommend having your newborn photographed during those first couple weeks after they have arrived, is because typically newborn babies that are between 6 to 21 days olde are much sleepier and more settled overall. This can make for a much smoother newborn photo shoot especially if you are having your newborn baby photographed with any siblings. These newborn babies are also more flexible and still slightly curled up like they were when inside mother’s tummy. This means that they can pose naturally in this curled up state and can easily be wrapped and swaddled using the fabric layers I carry in studio. When you see newborn pictures in my newborn image gallery like this, these babies are truly only days old. In addition, the newborn photography props, and outfits that I carry in studio are designed only for these tiny little bodies that easily curl up into position.
Once newborn babies are older than 21 days old, they start to spend longer periods of time awake and start to become very aware of their new surroundings. They are more easily startled by their parents’ voices, sibling movement near and around them. Their bodies are also starting to grow and become more stretched out and larger in size height and weight. With these changes, it is less likely that your newborn baby will be asleep during the session.

I do believe however that it is never too late to have your baby photographed. It is possible for me to create newborn photos and even newborn pictures with siblings after there are 21 days old, it just means that we need to adapt the session to what works better for older babies! There are some specific milestones that each baby reaches in their first year of life so keeping this in mind, there are some more favorable times when to have your professional baby photos taken.
Because each newborn baby can be very different in their growth and development, prior to your older newborn session we will discuss where your newborn baby is at developmentally so that we can adapt and create a session that will be best for them and your family.

Older newborn photo sessions are slightly shorter in length compared to regular newborn sessions as typically I will spend more time photographing the connection between family members rather than most of the newborn photo shoot being dedicated to getting individual newborn photos. I will still photograph your older baby alone, but because they are more awake and more aware of their surroundings, their attention span is also much shorter and therefore results in a shorter session time.
Should your older newborn baby be sleepy on the day of your newborn session, I will attempt to swaddle them using the larger fabric layers I have in studio. I will usually recommend bringing a solid color onesie to wear as an alternative should your baby not like to be swaddled or be too large to swaddle using a wrap. It is important to note that these sleepy poses are not guaranteed as it is much less common to have an older newborn baby fall asleep and stay settled like younger newborn babies do.
