There are no words to express how honoured I feel that the families I photograph have entrusted in me to document this very special time in their lives. Sweet little Benjamin came into the studio with his parents for his very first photography portrait session at 8 days old and he truly was a delight to photograph! When I first connect with parents wanting to have professional newborn photos taken of their brand new baby, for the most part, they have no idea what to expect during a professional newborn photography session. Perhaps they are first time parents or parents that just didn’t have an opportunity to have newborn photos taken with their first born child.
To help best prepare parents and to ensure there are no surprises when you arrive for your newborn session, I will spend time with you during your pre-session consultation to cover all of the important details you need to know before your portrait session date. This consultation can be done over the phone, via zoom or you can come into the studio to get a feel for my home studio space and so we can meet in person beforehand. I will cover what to bring on the day of your newborn photography session as well as offer wardrobe suggestions based on my experience photographing newborns and their families. We will cover backdrop options as well as newborn prop preferences, go over my session workflow when handling and caring for your newborn baby and of course answer any additional questions you might have.
When speaking with Benjamin’s parents, they were wanting light and airy newborn images with neutral grey tones and the primary focus on their little man. All newborn photography sessions at my studio are created and planned for with a great attention to detail, always doing my best to create the style of images you are hoping for but with the safety of your newborn baby as my top priority. I will only photograph your newborn baby in natural poses and will always move onto a different pose should your newborn baby be uncomfortable. I keep my studio cozy and warm to ensure your newborn will not get cold and I schedule lots of time for snuggles and for feeding because I feel it is important for your brand new baby to feel loved and secure during their entire newborn session with me. It is also important to me that parents feel relaxed and are comfortable throughout the session while I am holding and posing their brand new baby.
I typically start newborn sessions with your baby wrapped up snug so I can capture those sleepy photos that so many parents love. Depending on how settled your newborn baby is we will change each pose a bit by adding hats, headbands, alternate fabric layers and then move onto photographing them in the newborn prop that you have selected. As you can see in the images throughout this post, little Benjamin slept through his entire session. That is more common with younger newborns when they come into studio under 14 days of age. If you book your newborn session when your newborn baby is older, we can still get gorgeous photos but your proofing gallery will have more awake images documenting the adorable expressions on your babies face. Newborn babies do burn through calories very quickly and so having extra milk available either by nursing your newborn baby throughout the photo session or coming with some extra bottles of milk for feeding will result in a much smoother newborn photo session. This also offers some time to cuddle your baby before we move onto posing your new baby boy or girl with you, your spouse and any siblings.
I do have a variety of backdrop options available which you will have the opportunity to select from prior to your newborn photography session however I do find that most parents will select neutral tones in white, ivory or grey, especially for the images taken with themselves and their newborn baby. For the individual photos taken of your newborn, we can select a color palate that will compliment your nursery and the other rooms in your home where you plan to display you final images. Lots of parents love to stick with the traditional blue or pink tones when selecting their newborn wraps depending on if they have had a boy or a girl, however I do carry a large selection of wraps, knit layers and furs to select from in varying tones. Not sure what color tone to choose, don’t fret! I will help you through the entire selection process to ensure your final images reflect your families personal style.

Due to Covid-19, I am only photographing newborns in studio at this time until restrictions are eased by the Alberta Health Services and the Government of Alberta. My newborn photography studio is fully licensed and insured with strict Covid-19 protocols in place to ensure the safety of everyone that enters into the studio. Specifically for newborns, all newborns are photographed first thing in the morning with no session booked 24hrs prior to the date of your newborn session. Newborn sessions are best photographed within the first 14 days of life however I will photograph newborns and babies of all ages.
